Approaches of Counselling

What is psychotherapy?

The process of healing and counseling people with mental or emotional problems is called ‘psychotherapy’. In today’s hectic world, people are going through a lot of things. These things may be family problems, career tension, peer pressure for children, mental tortures, the impact of mental and physical trauma, depression, anxiety, and whatnot.

Such things are not advised to be neglected. In fact, psychotherapy is for such people who can be healed and make their minds fresh again. Psychotherapy can be done along with medicines. Different types of therapies are recommended for different psychological problems. All problems cannot be cured by one technique.

Types of therapies

As said earlier, mental health professionals use different therapies for different psychological problems. The selection of therapy depends on several factors like the type of patient’s illness and his/her comfort by the way in which he/she wants to be treated. Following are the different types of therapy-

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy commonly known as CBT treats people who are affected by depression, anxiety, trauma, etc. CBT helps in identifying the illness and tries to change the thinking of affected people by positivity. It puts accurate and appropriate thoughts instead of negative thoughts in the mind of the person.

Interpersonal Therapy

IPT which is Interpersonal therapy is the shortest form of treatment compared to others. It deals with people having issues with mental grief, work pressure, problems in other people’s behavior, etc. this therapy imbibes the feeling of expression of thoughts in the patient and forces him/her to increase the communication process. This helps the person to express freely his/her thoughts.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

This therapy comes under CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). Dialectical behavior therapy deals with emotional problems. It heals people with suicidal thoughts, personality disorders, eating disorders, etc. this therapy focuses on teaching these people new skills that can create a healthy impact on themselves. Dialectical Behavior Therapy can be conducted in groups too.

Supportive Therapy

Supportive Therapy deals with increasing self-confidence, reducing anxiety and depression, building self-esteem, etc. It helps patients who face mental health conditions for their entire lives. Supportive therapy encourages such people to love themselves no matter what the disability is.

Psychodynamic Therapy

People affected by their bad childhood experiences are treated with this therapy. There are people or children who experience something inappropriate in their childhood and remain affected by it. So, psychodynamic therapy helps such people to create self-awareness and self-confidence so that they can be confident in their lives ahead.

Apart from the above therapies, there are many more types of therapy that are invented for different mental and emotional imbalances.

Some of them are,

  • Creative Arts Therapy

  • Animal-assisted Therapy

  • Psychoanalysis Therapy

  • Play Therapy.

How are psychotherapy sessions conducted?

Psychotherapy sessions include talk and interventions. There is no specific number of people that are allowed for therapy. Therapies can be conducted in an individual, group, family, friends, or common group of people.

Different psychotherapy sessions are designed for different age groups and categories. Also, there is no specific duration for therapy sessions. It again depends upon the nature and intensity of the person.

An approximate duration depends on the severity of the problem and session durations are usually 50 mins to an hour. The relationship between the patient and therapist should be on a firm basis and there should be trust between the both.

Conclusion

It is observed that many orthodox beliefs say psychiatrists are meant for ‘mad people’. It is high time we make people understand that undergoing some mental or emotional problem is not becoming mad. The way our physical problems need treatment, mental problems need treatment too.

There are hundreds and thousands of people out there who have begun a new life just because of psychotherapy. It is stated that psychotherapy has healed and cured about 75% of people. It has resulted in building new relations, positive thinkings in the minds and bodies of people. It has given people the motto to stay alive.

Hence, it is the duty of all of us to make this term of ‘psychology’ common to all. Spread maximum awareness as this is something that can change a negative person to a positive person naturally.
